Rest Gate

This gate sits in a single word: settle. Picture water at the end of the day, nothing pushing it, everything in it finding its own level again. Rest Gate is where a person stops, repairs and comes back to themselves — and it is also the gate the other seven hand marriage and family over to.

• Marriage and family: a relationship, settling down, a wedding.
• Settling and recovery: rest, a gathering, travel and shopping, moving into a new home.
• Matters that need a steady hand: renewing a contract, talking terms, training and study, research, working a knot loose rather than cutting it.
• Letting the heat come out: situations where the right move is to hold rather than press, and let the other side arrive on their own.

The standing prohibition on this gate is not to raise troops. What it is good at is taking the heat out of something, not meeting force with force — so where a thing has to be fought for, pushed through, or taken off somebody, do not expect help here. Worth separating too: the rest this gate means is the kind you come back from. Rest you never come back from is a different reading, and it belongs to the trap below rather than to the gate.

Nature

What the person involved needs underneath everything is safety and recovery. Pressure and depletion register early — they know they are tired before anybody around them has noticed. There is no hurry to be further ahead; the question that actually matters is whether the footing is steady.

Style

When something changes, the first move is to stop moving. Clearing up after a mess is where the person involved is genuinely good, and they will not be hurried into taking a position. Slower, yes — and every step is on ground that holds.

Strength

Recovery, and the knack of settling a team or a system down again after it has been shaken. Turnaround periods and repair-shaped roles suit the person involved; once things are steady they tend to run further than the people who never stopped at all.

Impression

Nobody has to hold themselves together around the person involved. Not loud, not competing for a seat — and yet that is the seat people drift towards. It takes a while to work out that the calm is not a manner being kept up, it is simply how they are.

Pitfall

Rest quietly turns into avoidance. Pulled too far inward, the person involved misses the moment that was theirs to take, and the fear of being drained one more time becomes a reason not to begin anything. The cost is real and slow: years can pass in a state that feels restful and is in fact stalled.
