Vermilion Bird

Of the eight deities, Vermilion Bird is the one that governs speech — the authority of the civilised word, which is to say everything a society runs on having said out loud or written down. Talk, documents, news: whatever travels by mouth or on paper passes through here, and the channel does not sort the appointment letter from the rumour. Which of the two has arrived is not settled in advance — of the eight, this is the one whose reading turns hardest on the condition it is standing in.

• News and documents — official letters, notices, approvals, contracts, and every version of the message finally arriving.
• Talk — argument, blame, idle gossip, and the back-and-forth across a negotiating table.
• Spread — reputation, public opinion, and the sheer ability to get a thing said and heard.
• ⭐ Its fortune is not written in: in strength it brings the welcome kind of paperwork — a posting, a promotion, an approval landing in hand; out of strength the same energy turns into disputes and the sort of noise that pulls a routine apart.

⚠ Vermilion Bird and Dark Warrior (玄武) hold the same one of the eight positions: on a Yang-cycle chart that position is called Vermilion Bird, and on a Yin-cycle chart the same position is called Dark Warrior. The tradition puts it as Vermilion Bird lying concealed beneath Dark Warrior — two faces of one seat. What they read, though, sits far apart: Vermilion Bird leans towards speech and paperwork, Dark Warrior towards the dark and the stolen, so they are not two spellings of one symbol. Only one of the two ever appears on any given chart. ⚠ One thing that is specific to this deity: it is filed as inauspicious, but of the eight that label sits on it most loosely. The same voice that carries an appointment letter carries a rumour — read the condition it is standing in before deciding which of the two it has brought.

Nature

There is a need to be heard, and a need for the answer to come straight back. The person involved is unusually alert to where news is travelling and to who is dealing with whom; sitting on something is uncomfortable, and most things only come clear once they have been said out loud. Feeling arrives fast and speech keeps pace with it — and under all the warmth sits real concern about how people answer back.

Style

The first move is to speak: explain, argue the case, put the position on the table, and let the thinking sort itself out on the way through. Reactions are very quick, and the words often run ahead of the action. The livelier the room, the more there is to spend.

Strength

The voice is the instrument — carrying news, starting a conversation, turning the mood of a matter in one direction. Hosting, public relations, sales and any outward-facing post suit the person involved; the more that can be said, the wider the reach.

Impression

The kind of person whose voice is in the room from the moment they walk into it: quick, able to pick up any thread, energy pushed outward. The delivery carries, which makes the spotlight easy to find and just as easy to overrun. Warm at first meeting, and the real temperament shows later.

Pitfall

Nine problems out of ten start at the mouth: feeling surges and the words stop passing through any filter. The more explaining that gets done, the more it reads as guilt. Treating "just say it clearly" as the answer to everything is what finally brings the disputes and the misunderstandings home.
