Qi Men Dun Jia vs. BaZi vs. Zi Wei Dou Shu: How They Differ, and Which to Choose

2026-06-15 · BaZi · Zi Wei · Comparison

The moment people start looking into Chinese metaphysics, the jargon piles up: BaZi, Zi Wei Dou Shu, Qi Men Dun Jia… they all sound mystical, all seem to "calculate" something — but how do they actually differ? Which one should you learn, which should you use?

The truth is these three solve different problems. Once you understand what each reads, you won't reach for the wrong tool. Keep one line in mind first: BaZi and Zi Wei read the "person"; Qi Men Dun Jia reads the "matter."

BaZi: The Native Grain of Who You Are

BaZi (the Four Pillars) builds a chart from your birth year, month, day, and hour, and reads a person's innate makeup — character, talents, the strengths of the Five Elements, the broad direction of a lifetime, and the ups and downs across different phases (the luck cycles).

Its strength is "knowing yourself": what kind of person you are, what path suits you, which years run smooth and which call for care. BaZi is like a lifelong base map — it draws the configuration you shipped with.

What it's not built for is answering "this specific thing, should I do it this week" — because its scale is "a lifetime," not "this moment."

Zi Wei Dou Shu: The Script of Your Life

Zi Wei Dou Shu also builds its chart from birth time, but it divides life into twelve palaces (self, wealth, career, marriage, children, property…) and layers on a hundred-plus stars for a finer picture.

If BaZi is the base grain, Zi Wei is more like a scene-by-scene breakdown of a life script: roughly where love is heading, how strong the career palace runs, what the wealth palace looks like — readable palace by palace. It speaks of luck cycles and annual flows too, tracking the highs and lows of each phase.

Zi Wei's strength is clear structure and fine detail by domain, well suited to systematically understanding the makeup of each area of your life. Like BaZi, it reads the "person" and the "long term," not "this matter right now."

Qi Men Dun Jia: This Matter, Right Now — How to Decide

Qi Men Dun Jia works on a completely different scale. It doesn't read your birth; it builds a nine-palace chart from the present moment, and reads "how the situation stands for this specific matter, right now."

What it does best is asking about matters and making decisions: should I push this deal now, should I take this offer, where is this relationship stuck, which direction to search for a lost item. It also helps with auspicious timing — picking a favorable time and direction to do something important.

In other words, BaZi and Zi Wei answer "who am I, and roughly how does my life go," while Qi Men Dun Jia answers "this matter, right now — how should I move." The former is destiny, the latter is divination; the former reads the long term, the latter reads the moment.

The One-Line Distinction

Tool Built from Reads Best at
BaZi Birth time Innate makeup, life direction Knowing yourself
Zi Wei Dou Shu Birth time The structure of each life domain Systematic self-overview
Qi Men Dun Jia Present time The situation of one specific matter now Asking, deciding, timing

The three don't clash — they complement: use BaZi or Zi Wei to understand your long-term chart, and Qi Men Dun Jia to handle the concrete decisions in front of you, one by one.

So Which Should You Choose

It depends on the problem you want to solve:

  • Want to understand yourself — character, talents, life direction, which years run smooth — start with BaZi or Zi Wei Dou Shu.
  • Want a systematic, domain-by-domain view of your life — Zi Wei Dou Shu is finer in structure.
  • Facing a specific present decision and want to see the situation, the right timing and direction — Qi Men Dun Jia fits best.

If you're stuck on a concrete choice right now — whether to take it, whether to leave, whether now is the time — Qi Men Dun Jia is built for exactly this kind of moment. Want to try it? No tool is better than another — only better or worse suited. See each one's strength clearly and pick by your need of the moment, and you won't take the long way around.
